HEADWEAR IS IMPORTANT IN SPORTS!

FUNCTION, IDENTITY AND SPONSORSHIP ARE THE THREE MAIN REASONS WHY HEADWEAR IS IMPORTANT IN SPORTS.

Activewear is worn for most sports or physical exercise, primarily for the three reasons above. Each of these will be discussed within this blog, but it is important to remember that hats are synonymous with sport and some have even originated from them, such as the famed “baseball” cap.

FUNCTION:

Sports clothing is essential when competing and is designed to ensure the wearers comfort, without restricting movement. Of course different sports have different clothing needs.

Some sports are synonymous with headgear for different reasons, for example, beanies are common in winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding to help with warmth. Baseball caps are mainstays in popular summer sporting activities like golf, tennis and of course baseball, as they shade the players eyes from the sun and protect your head from the rays.

Whilst players want their eyes shaded from the sun, they don’t want their head to overheat and therefore most caps in sports are made from lightweight and comfortable material such as polyester, cotton and mesh.

IDENTITY.

Identity in sport is crucial. Teams, manufacturers and sponsors have consistently used customised merchandise (such as headwear) to exploit the wearers desire for a certain identity. An Arsenal fan for example buys an Arsenal cap, not a Chelsea cap to show their allegiance. These sports clubs, manufacturers and commercial sponsors know how important this identity is to their audience. Any brand wanting to maximize revenue will have a range of customised merchandise which is essential for both athletes and the fans.

GROUP SPORTS CAPS

There are some cases where a certain hat is affiliated with a sport even though it has no real benefit or in-game relevance. For example snapbacks are a streetwear product, and are also heavily connected with basketball. This may be because basketball legend; Michael Jordan wore snapbacks himself and helped them become streetwear icons in the urban fashion world, as well as the basketball community.

SPONSORSHIP.

This differs between sports, for example golf, cricket and tennis have strict regulations on the amount, size and position of branding. This is why those sports have subtly branded hats to suit the tone of the sport. On the other side of the spectrum Formula One hats are walking billboards.

Caps are not always worn during the game either as (previously mentioned) Michael Jordan famously came out into a post-press conference wearing a snapback. Combat sport athletes wear sponsored caps and snapbacks before and after the match is over but never during.

BOXING

It makes sense for the sponsor to use headwear when in the media’s eye because it’s in an area that everyone will guarantee to see the logo.
